"Housed in part of the recently restored Karolyi Palace, home of Petőfi Múzeum of Literature, the Károlyi Étterem and Cafe is an unassuming, reasonably priced place to take relatives or friends for bit of local atmosphere, particularly when you wish to show them you know a quiet "secret spot" away from the busy sidewalk cafes. The attractive Biedermeier-esque interior seats around 100, while there's room for around 100 more outdoors in courtyard underneath the chestnut trees, offering a shaded nook to cool off during the dog days of summer. The menu is largely comprised of range traditional Hungarian favourites, such as roast goose leg with braised red cabbage or catfish stew with cottage cheese noodles. There are also salads and lighter "Mediterrenean" options. Overall the food is fresh and well-prepared, and though often quite rich, several some imaginative twists. The wine list is in keeping with the modest intentions of the place, with most bottles under Ft 3.000, besides and handful of more expensive offerings. The Károlyi is a relaxing spot in central Pest, and excellent value for money.
